New Year's Rezzies

This week brings us some fun pop, hip-hop, dance, techno tunes to help you think up some lovely New Year’s resolutions. Here are some wonderful suggestions: Use More Lube in 2006, Listen to Sissel, Eat Less Cat Food When Drunk, Pray to New and Fun Gods, Topple More Dictators (aka Bush), Add a Link to Musica Obscura.

Tommy february6 – Lonely In Gorgeous
Tommy february6 is the alter ego and solo J-Pop project of Tomoko Kawase, otherwise known as the lead singer of the Japanese band The Brilliant Green. Tommy february6 is a very stylized persona which is meant to be somewhat geeky with schoolgirl glasses, an obsession for pink, Hello Kitty and cheerleaders and the music is very 80s synth-pop. She also has an evil twin named Tommy heavenly6 which Tomoko uses to release more pop-rock albums, whose persona is much more sophisticated than Tommy february6. Although this song is mostly unintelligible to the non-Japanese, the overall sound reminds a little of Gwen Stefani. New Year’s Resolution: This year be less lonely and more gorgeous.

Other Tommy february6 Songs to Check Out: Love Is Forever, Je T’aime Je T’aime, Choose Me Or Die

Blue Lagoon – Break My Stride
Blue Lagoon is a German reggae-influenced pop group featuring Estrella’s sweet vocals and David O. Joseph’s swaggering rasta-rap. So far, most of the their hit songs have been covers of older tunes such as Matthew Wilder’s “Break My Stride” from the 80s, but with fun, new uptempo reggae-pop arrangements. This year no one’s gonna break my stride!

Other Blue Lagoon Songs to Check Out: Heartbreaker, Love Is The Key, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, Now That We Found Love

Deetah – Relax

Deetah takes us from German reggae-rap to Swedish hip-hop by way of Chile but she raps in English. Deetah, aka Claudia Ogalde, was born in Chile but moved to Sweden when she was 4 years old, as did many Chileans 20-plus years ago trying to escape Chilean dictator Pinochet’s regime. Here’s a mellow, melodic rap you can relax to while thinking up wicked ways to get back at Pinochet.

Other Deetah Songs to Check Out: El Paraiso Rico, Honey Lollipop, More Than Enough

Cam Fox – Do Ya Think I’m Sexy
More cover tunes are what we need in the new year. Cam Fox shows off her sexy rendition of Rod Stewart’s hit “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.” It’s a fun bit of dance pop fluff. Cam Fox is so obscure, we can find no references to this musician on the ‘net and no pics, so we’ve elected to bring you a pic of an Arctic Fox in her place. New Year’s Resolution: Be so damn sexy you don’t need to ask anyone if you are.

Other Cam Fox Songs to Check Out: Ummm…your guess is as good as ours!

Blümchen – Der beste von allen
“The best of all.” Little Blossom, aka Blümchen is the best German techno of all! Hyper hip, fun German techno. Not that boring, dull, sadistic German techno of yore. She only recorded for five years between the ages of 15 and 20, but the story is, she’s working on a new album to be released in 2006, after a 6 year hiatus! This year be the best of all!

Other Blümchen Songs to Check Out: Heut Ist Mein Tag, Die Welt Gehört Mir, Bicycle Race, Just A Dream

Oh my goodness, that takes me back. One of my nicknames in high school was Blumchen, because someone said I looked like her...I still listen to Herz an Herz and Kleine Satelitte. Thanks for the trip down memory lane...
