The Star is Back

Sissel: "One Day" (single - radio premiere Monday, 23. Oct 2000)

(Universal)

Sissel's first new piece of music in nearly seven years can hardly be called distinctly original. It just feels like it is.

And beautiful. Quite beautiful. And quite beautifully fits the market niche of Celine Dion and the Adult Contemporary segment.

The choice of the single is hardly by chance. "One Day" has a strikingly strong echo of "My Heart Will Go On," Celine Dion's super hit from the "Titanic" soundtrack -- on which Sissel was also involved. The connection is so strong that the picture of Kate Winslet standing on the Titanic's guardrail with the wind in her hair becomes unshakeable.

"Here I am, on my own again" goes the first line of the song, and the rest of the text can be described as a commentary on this important crossroads in Sissel's career. "One Day" was written by Sissel herself together with the StarGate trio in Trondheim, who also produced the song.

They have given the song a grown up and timeless sound, where Sissel's magnificent and crystal-clear voice luckily has the freedom to roam. Even when the song reaches pompous heights in the arrangement towards the end, they hold back the horses, so that the expression never becomes sickeningly sweet.

Speculations
There have been many speculations in Sissel's quiet years following her last album as to which direction her musical career would take.

Vacillations among artistic styles have been at times confusing, but "One Day" points out that this is the desired attempt to make Sissel into a big international star. And to say it such, neither Sissel nor the song hinder the way here!
