Sissel's Album is Ready

And so it's finally finished: 20. November Sissel Kyrkjebø releases her first solo album in six years. Before Christmas it will be launched in Norway, while the rest of the world waits its turn 'til next year. One of the contributors on the Sissel album is Morten Abel.

Sissel Kyrkjebø is relieved to finally have a date to commit herself to. The work on the first solo album after "Innerst i sjelen" (Deep Within My Soul) in 1994 has been long and difficult.

Among other things a demanding year of work in the USA with the star producer Rick Chertoff was concluded last Fall without any concrete result. And then six million Norwegian crowns ($670,000 US) was used up.

Things didn't get moving until first in February when she started cooperating with the producer team at Stargate in Trondheim and the Disclab studio in Oslo.

Choosing songs
"Both the travel distances and the cultural differences were much less," said Sissel's manager, Arne Svare.

The for-the-time-being nameless album will contain 11-12 songs. The producers have 18-20 recorded songs to choose among, and are now working to create the right mix on the album. The majority of the songs have English lyrics.

"Sissel has had the opportunity to be involved in the entire process since we came to Norway. There was also quite a difference in music quality compared to the USA. Sissel felt pure and simple that the material and substance of the songs there were not good enough," said Svare.

In an interview with Dagbladet during the summer Sissel told about her experiences with the work in the USA.

"It is clear that the work on the new album has been frustrating, among other things. But it's not unusual in our branch that things take a completely new course. Therefore, I'm taking the changes very calmly," said Sissel.

Norway first
In the meantime, Svare won't release the names of songwriters and any duet partners that might be on the album. But he does confirm that Morten Abel has been involved.

Earlier there were rumors that Espen Lind was participating, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The head producer on the album is Jørn Dahl, who was also with the producer team behind Lene Marlin's "Playing My Game."

Sissel and the record company Universal Music are limiting themselves to the Norwegian market this Fall.

"There's simply too big of a time demand to do something before Christmas. There isn't even time for concerts in Norway in connection with the release," said Svare.

Regardless, this is golden news for Universal. An album by Sissel Kyrkjebø at the beginning of the Christmas shopping season puts dollar signs in the eyes of director Petter Singsaas and his staff.

"We're not thinking small here. We're expecting that we'll sell many, many albums. We can do that because historically Sissel has sold a lot of whatever she's been involved with. But we don't have any number goal for the time being," said Petter Singsaas.

Universal plans to make Norwegian TV-viewers very aware that Sissel Kyrkjebø is releasing a new album. TV promotion will be the most important marketing of the album.
