Ever since he was a small child, he would never do anything, but only sit and rake the ashes...." Thus begins the story of the Ash Boy and Soria Moria palace, one of Norway's most loved fairytales. Ever since Mother first opened the door in to Asbjørnsen and Moe's fairytale world, the Ash Boy has both engaged and excited me. The boy who didn't want to do anything -- in other's eyes -- but in the end won the princess and half the kingdom has inspired me to believe that it matters. Even though challenges can rise up like high mountains, there is often found a path which leads over the highest forests and down into the valley on the other side. You only must want to see it. When that is said, it must also be added that it is not easy to find happiness in the real world, but in the same way that the Ash Boy went out to find his Soria Moria palace, we can travel out to find ours. It is no easy way, either for us nor the fairytale hero, but once you've caught a glimpse of Soria Moria palace, you have no choice. You must go. It is not certain that we'll reach our goal, but that isn't always the most important -- at least not in the real world. To follow one's beliefs, one's dream, has merit in itself. The way is the goal. There are two words which I believe the Ash Boy often said to himself when he traveled east of the sun and west of the moon: "It matters!" I, myself, have experienced the truth of these words when I went to the slums of Bangkok. It is perhaps not great what we do, compared to all the world's problems, and perhaps they are right who say that "it's only drops in the ocean." But it is important at the same time to say that THE OCEAN IS MADE OF DROPS! Now, perhaps you believe the only dreams that fill my head are idealistic and "deep." But I can say that I'm hardly like the Ash Boy when it comes to dreams. I don't know what he dreamt about when he sat and stirred the ashes, but after he met his princess in Soria Moria palace his thoughts which dwelled on her fairytale beauty consumed his blood with fire. I also have romantic dreams. Dreams of the great love which crosses all bounds, only to reach the only one. "Crossing all boundaries to reach you, have I always -- as your love -- followed the path of my longing." - Grenseløs -Sissel |
